This is a Marathon length march (26.2 miles) through the desert.
It is held to remember the suffering of WWII prisoners that were forced marched over 80 miles by Japanese Forces in the Philippine Islands. Members of New Mexico’s 200th Coastal Artillery was the primary reasoning behind this event as many of them did not return. A motion picture of this march called “The Great Raid”; was made in 2005. This year marks the 23rd event with an expected count of 7,000 participants. Medical support for this event requires approximately 300 personnel who have always come from the New Mexico (Dona Ana County) area but they would like to see the opportunity extended to the El Paso area. Students who volunteer will work under the supervision of military and civilian medical personnel in a variety of areas familiar to marathons.
