YHSC is for middle and high school students who want to make a difference in the health of our community. Youth who participate in the program receive free health-related training and carry out a service learning project. The training includes important topics related to the health field such as health education and disease prevention, cultural diversity, vulnerable populations, and youth become certified in CPR and AED. As part of the training, the Borderland AHEC arranges volunteer experiences for participating youth at clinics, hospitals, social service agencies, and community-based organizations.
Besides receiving training, youth have an opportunity to design and carry out a service learning project on an issue that matters to them and their community.Serving as volunteers in the health field means youth make a positive impact on their community while building their experience. This type of involvement can help youth enter the health field as well as strengthen their college applications.
The Borderland AHEC coordinates YHSC within schools, with groups that meet during school hours, as well as outside of schools, with groups that meet on Saturdays. This means all area youth have an opportunity to participate.
